Fix Your Location Data Before You Spend a Dollar on Local Media
Before any local media runs, there is a boring question that determines whether the money works: is each location correct everywhere it appears? Most brands assume yes. Most brands are wrong, and the error compounds quietly across every channel downstream.
What incorrect actually looks like
It is rarely a wrong address. It is smaller and more corrosive than that.
Hours that were updated at the store but never in the listing
Two entries for the same location, one from a prior owner or a prior name
Category assignments that describe what the business was three years ago
Phone numbers routing to a call center when the customer expected the location
A service area drawn for convenience rather than for where customers actually come from
Each of these is individually trivial. Together they determine whether a location is eligible to appear at all when local demand surfaces, which is upstream of everything a media budget can buy.
Why it gets skipped
Because nobody wants to own it. It is not creative, it is not strategy, and it does not present well. It is data hygiene across dozens of entries, and the work is genuinely tedious.
It also has no obvious internal home. Marketing assumes operations handles it. Operations assumes marketing does. The listings drift, and the drift is invisible until someone actually audits it.
The audit that takes an afternoon
For each location, check four things and record them in one place. Not a platform, a spreadsheet is fine.
Name, address, and phone, matched exactly against what the location actually uses
Hours, including holiday and seasonal variations
Primary and secondary categories, chosen for what you want to be found for rather than what you technically are
Duplicates, which are more common than most teams expect and which split your visibility between entries
Fixing what that audit surfaces typically costs nothing but time and produces measurable movement in local visibility within weeks. It is the highest return per dollar available in local marketing, which is precisely why it is worth doing before the budget conversation, not after.
You cannot buy your way past bad location data. You can only spend on top of it.
